D. Bruce MacKay is Coordinator of Liberal Education at the University of Lethbridge in Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada. He tries to teach as much as possible with his mouth shut. Although disconcerting for students who like to be told what they should know, this approach does encourage independent thinking and communicating and can, as a result, be quite liberating. He still plays keyboards in various musical enterprises and continues to get a charge out of the way collaborative musical effort creates something much greater than the mere sum of its individual musical parts. A daughter with a disability has inspired him to be involved with a local disability advocacy group. He is learning about the way various systems, social, political, and educational, can handicap and limit the potential of people, and this experience feeds his conviction that liberal education is good and necessary.
